UNIVERSITY OF CYPRUS Special Scientist Research
Title: Special Scientist Research in physical oceanography modeling No. of Positions: One (1) Category: Employment contract for seven (7) months. Location: University of Cyprus, Nicosia, Cyprus
The University of Cyprus (Oceanography Center) announces one part-time (100 hours/month) Special Research Scientist position in the area of physical oceanography modelling for the funded project FAMOS.
Applicants need not be citizens of the Republic of Cyprus. Applicants should however ensure, before applying, that in case they are selected they will be residing in Cyprus on a full-time basis during the employment period; submission of application implies acceptance of this condition.
FAMOS (Sustainable, reliable, and socially acceptable modular Floating islAnds for Multi-use Offshore Spaces) is an EU- funded project (European Partnerships – Sustainable Blue Economy, SBEP; 1.5.2024-30.4.2027). FAMOS addresses the following:
- Technological development of innovative floating island concepts that can withstand extreme wave conditions typical of fully exposed offshore sites of the Mediterranean Sea, the North Sea, and the Baltic Sea.
- Integration of marine renewable energy devices (e.g., wind, solar, waves) with floating foundations, mooring systems, and protective floating breakwaters.
- Social acceptance of the floating island solutions with reduced risks of conflict between different users.
- Climatological evaluation of the offshore regions for deployment of future floating islands.
The main contribution of the Oceanography Center (OC-UCY) is in WP2 - Environmental resource assessment, site identification and climate change impact, the objective of which is to produce a high fidelity metocean hindcast data- base, with improved physical terms that will contribute to a more accurate design of the FAMOS system with environmen- tally friendly elements. The applicant is also expected to also contribute to other WPs of the project with the project obli- gations. In this context, the OC-UCY announces one (1) Special Research Scientist position.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The successful candidate is expected to
- Setup and perform high-fidelity metocean simulations with high space and time resolution will be developed based on numerical simulation with unstructured grids in support of the selection of the candidate offshore sites for locating the floating islands in the three European basins.
- Conduct a detailed climatological and trend evaluation of all offshore regions using the 50-year hindcasted dataset.
- Contribute to all WPs of the FAMOS project.
- Prepare project reports and deliverables
- Write scientific papers describing the research outcome, to be published in international peer-reviewed journals
- Present the research outcomes at scientific conferences
QUALIFICATIONS
- Applicants must have an MSc degree in Physical Oceanography, or in Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or in other relevant field.
- Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics algorithms and theory (e.g. Finite Volume or Finite Element methods) will be a significant advantage.
- Experience with the SCHISM numerical model will be an advantage
EMPLOYMENT TERMS The position concerns part-time employment (100 hours/month) for a duration of seven (7) months. The gross monthly salary will depend on qualifications and experience, up to a maximum of €2000. Employee contributions to various Government Funds will be deducted from the aforementioned amount.
