Essential & Desirable Criteria for the Role

Essential 1. You must undergo and pass as security & police check. If you are found

successful, you will be requested to provide a Clean Criminal Record and a

Sex Offenders Certificate issued by the Republic of Cyprus.

  1. At least 5 years working experience in an administrative position in a public

or private organisation.

  1. Ability to manage and prioritise multiple tasks and work well under pressure

and large work loads under time deadlines.

  1. Experience of the day-to-day operation of an administrative office.
  1. Proficiency in English and Greek
  1. A good knowledge of office-based IT is needed, including Microsoft Office

packages (Word, Excel, Outlook) and electronic filing practices.

  1. The ability to communicate in English both verbally and in writing is an

essential part of this role.

The official language of the Sovereign Base Areas is English and consequently English is

the official language of British Forces Cyprus. All documents are to be completed in this

language. All employees of the Sovereign Base Areas Administration and British Forces

Job Description

Brief Description of Role

The Litigation Supervisor (“LS”) line manages the Litigation Support Officers who form the Litigation Support team. The Team supports Senior Crown Counsel and Crown Counsel to conduct litigation on behalf of the Sovereign Base Areas. In close collaboration with counsel, the LS oversees the work of the Litigation Support team to ensure that the workflow of all litigation cases is effectively managed, ensuring that Crown Counsel are well prepared for the cases which they are advising on, and presenting in court each week (currently 1000+ per year).

The LS works closely with SBA Police, Area Office investigators and Customs and Immigration to ensure the timely provision of witness statements and other evidence to Crown Counsel. The LS liaises with the SBA Court staff to manage the listing of cases in the SBA Court. The LS also oversees the production of trial bundles and other documents to be filed in court and manages correspondence with defendants and defence lawyers. This includes compiling and disclosing material to the defence in advance of court hearings, to ensure compliance with court case management directions.

The LS is responsible for ensuring that the team maintains accurate records to enable statistics to be produced about trends and the team’s performance namely, (i) a litigation register, (ii) a register of cases where the accused elects trial in the Republic of Cyprus, (iii) a register of offenders removal cases.

The LS will have an extensive knowledge of litigation and legal advice processes and be able to manage court deadlines effectively. They will act on instructions from Counsel where appropriate and also be able to work independently to determine what Counsel will need for each case, delegating work to the team where appropriate. They will also be required to review and adapt the team’s processes where appropriate to improve efficiency.

Priorities (list in order)

To support Crown Counsel to conduct litigation on behalf of the Sovereign Base Areas providing paralegal and administrative support directly and through allocation to the Litigation Support Officers,

To maintain accurate records as follows: (i) litigation register, (ii) register of cases where the accused elects trial in the Republic of Cyprus, (iii) register of offender removal cases. To ensure court case management deadlines are met, including deadlines to disclose prosecution material, to prepare paginated bundles and to file and serve documents on the parties and with the court.

Responsible for (Tasks/Duties) Percentage (%) of time spent during the working week on each task

Overseeing the work of the Litigation Support team, supporting Crown Counsel to conduct litigation by:

  • evaluating and monitoring all incoming correspondence and or police/area office/ customs case files,
  • supporting Crown Counsel in their caseload management and litigation diaries,
  • opening and maintaining legal advice and litigation files on electronic databases and hard copy,
  • acting on Crown Counsels’ instructions to compile prosecution material and indexed and paginated trial bundles, ensuring disclosure is made as per the court directions or Counsels’ instructions,
  • working with Crown Counsel to ensure court case management deadlines are met, including deadlines to disclose prosecution material, to prepare e paginated bundles and to file and serve documents on the parties and with the court.
